Rock
Island High School sponsors a girls and boys swimming and diving
program. Rock Island history of swimming and diving started in 1960
for the boy's team and 1975 for the girl's program. In 1999 Rock Island
School Dist. added Jr. High Swimming. Rock Islands Pool was built in
1968.
The program has had several All-American awards. Most recently Brent
Lohiemer in the 100 Fly and 200 IM, Brad Hammer consideration in the
100 Breast. All-American Academic honors by- Emily Gang(#1 in class),
Chris Pearson(#1 in class), Katie Patche(#1 in class), Natalie Jackson,
Chet Berg, Will Mollure, Deric Bert, Brad Hammer(#1 in class), David
Walker.
The boys program has had a state champion Marc Gilliam in the 100
Fly. Marc set and held the state record for that event until 1988.
Marc still holds one of the top 35 times ever performed at the state
meet. The team placed top ten in team standings 1966-69. The boys have
been sectional champions in 87,88,91. The have been conference
champions in 85,86,87,88,89,91.
The Girls team has placed top ten in the state in 1978. They have
been sectional champions in 91,92,93,94,95. The program has also be
conference champions in 96,97,98,99. They have also held undefeated dual
seasons in 96,97,98.
In 1999 the district start the Rock Island School District Jr. High Swim Team.
In 1998 Rock Isalnd High School with the help of the Thode Family
was one of the first high schools to purchase a digital score board.
The board is able to display multi color, swimmers names, times,
places, graphic images, video and sound. The Thode Family also help to
undergo major renivation of the pool office, timing table, lighting and
painting.
