Reading Programs

Ten of our eleven elementary buildings are participants of the Rebecca Caudill Reading Program.  Students in grades 3-8 are invited to read at least 8 of the 20 titles on the Rebecca Caudill Nominees list.  All students that do read at least 8 are then invited to participate in the District Rebecca Caudill Awards program in May.  This consists of all eleigible participants gathering at the Milan Community Center for pizza, pop, entertainment, an introduction to next year's Rebecca Caudill Nominees and a book talk.

The Illinois School Library Media Association also provides a list of 20 books which are considered must reads for K-3 students.  The Monarch Award Program is similar to the Rebecca Caudill Program.  Several district schools are in the beginning stages of setting up Monarch Programs.

Several of our buildings listed below participate in the Accelerated Reader Program.  Using STAR (Standardized Testing Accessment for Reading) and Accelerated Reader together allows teachers the opportunity to use the Reading Renaissance method of reading improvement.  To learn more about the program visit the Renaissance Learning web site.

Participating buildings in Accelerated Reader:  Audubon, Denkmann, Earl Hanson, Frances Willard,  Horace Mann, Thomas Jefferson, Edison, Washington and Rock Island High School.

Many of our buildings also participate in the Pizza Hut Book It! Reading Program and/or Swing of the Quad Cities Reading Program.  Find out more about the programs!
