Professional Development Committee

Meeting Minutes

Members Present:  Andy Campbell, Lisa Bass-Larson, Jesse Adams, Jennifer Page, Sue Magerkurth.

Our Accomplishments this Year:

1)    We designed a survey during the fall of 2007, and had over 55 teachers submit their input about professional development needs.  The top two identified needs were Gang Activity Awareness and Time for Inter-departmental Curricular Development.
2)    The first professional development sessions have been scheduled.  On May 6, teachers will be given training during one of their prep periods (Bill Osborne will be assigning the topic for this date).
3)    The first professional development session for next year is being coordinated.  Janice Berg, an expert on autistic students, will be the presenter for 1st quarter.  As of now, the session will follow the same format as our May 6 training.

Goals for Next Year (subject to change):

1)    1st Quarter: Autistic children and teaching strategies for autistic students, presented by Janice Berg.
2)    2nd Quarter (tentative): Articulation meetings between Junior High and High School in each major subject area, including Math, English, Science, Health, Social Studies, Music, Art, etc.
3)    3rd Quarter (tentative): BIT (Behavior Intervention Team), led by Perry Bentson, who is the school‚s BIT leader, will train teachers regarding behavior intervention strategies for students.
4)    4th Quarter (tentative): Gang Awareness, presented by local police. Also stress management (possibly given by health professionals from RIFAC or Trinity).
5)    (Tentative Secondary Topic) ˆ implementing PLATO into daily lessons, by Andrew Hains.

Actions taken:
Goals: Work out any problems with the 8-period day that we forsee.  Look at scheduling.  Continue to request the graphing calculators that we have been denied that would help our students be more successful on the ACT.

Accomplishments:  We developed an 8-period day that incorporated a Math/English lab.  We discussed it with the staff and put it forth for a vote and it passed.
