    Classroom Expectations

Welcome to Edison Junior High and Mrs. Long's Classroom.  Regardless of which subject your student has with me this year, expectations are the same.  My job is to keep you child safe and to teach new skills to our students.  Your child's job is to help allow that to happen.  Together learning will occur in an enjoyable and meaningful way.

    Our Classroom Mission Statement

Students will give their best effort to learn, so that they can achieve in life.  They will be respectful, do their work, show honesty, and be responsible.

    Homework2:                    Homework               Homework3:

Homework is due the next day after it is assigned, unless you are sick.  10 points will be deducted from the score for each day that it is late.

In Literature/Reading Class we will be doing the Direct Instruction Reading Program.  All work must be done in class.  There will not be homework, specifically for this program.  Students will receive grades based upon their in class work.  Absences will significantly hurt their grades and learning.  Work may only be made up with the teacher before or after school.

Your child will have reading homework.
    • Students will receive a Reading Log and are expected to read daily outside of class.  They are expected to read 300 minutes a month, complete the log and turn it in for a grade.  Parents must sign the log before the log will be graded.
    • We will read novel units each quarter.  There will be assignments based upon the novel (comprehension questions and activities) as we read.
    • Accelerated Reader books.  Students are expected to read 4 AR books each quarter and pass the AR tests.  These books may also be used for their Reading Log and may also be one of our novel units.  These are books are found in our school library.  A complete list of these books is available on the Edison website.
In Social Studies, we have a two year rotation of curriculum.  Year 1, we study geography and  American History up until the Civil War.  Year 2 studies are the Civil War until present times.  Each quarter we have a special extended project for students to complete, most often as homework.  We spend approximately 2 weeks on each chapter in History.  There will be vocabulary that your student will be expected to know and spell.  We have homework (vocabulary and content worksheets usually 4 days a week).  Your student will have worksheets that do not require the text book to complete.  Textbooks stay in the classroom, unless special arrangements are made.

    Internet Safety

    Computer2:                         Computer:

Digital Citizenship is the responsibility of everyone in our ever expanding and growing global connections world.  Technology allows instant access to information, purchasing, communications, and more.
    • It is imperative that we teach ourselves and our children safe ways to use the new technologies to protect us from fraud, viruses, and predators.
    • It is equally important to be empathetic to others, to appreciate that what we say on-line is not anonymous, and that it can be hurtful to others.  Cyberbullying must not be allowed.
    • Finally, we must all recognize that information seen on the Internet is no different than that which we find in a book.  It is the intellectual property of someone else.  It is not ours to freely use without permission from the author/owner or citing it as a reference in our writing.
Netsmartz is a website for parents, students, and more that provides a great wealth of educational information about Digital Citizenship.  The Illinois State Police, Boys and Girls Clubs, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children are actively supporting this website and the resources it has for families, schools and communities.
