I'm often known to my students as "Mrs. C",
and following are just "a few of my favorite things":
Favorite colors - Red, black and purple
Favorite foods - Pizza, chocolate, & "real" popcorn
Favorite children's books - Currently, I've enjoyed finding beautiful picture books that lend themselves to writing... That is, I use them as examples to encourage my students to write in the same genre. I love that my students are now recommending books for me to read!
Favorite books - In adult literature, I read everything by Jodi Piccoult
or Sue Miller. They write about realistic situations in families or
friendships.
Favorite movies - (Most recently) "I Am Sam" and "Junie"; (an "old favorite") "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" with Jack Nicholson. My daughter and I loved seeing some (just silly) movies together that made us "laugh out loud", including "Hitch" with Will Smith; "Taxi" and "Beauty Shop" with Queen Latifah. But, I also like the (thoughtful) movie Crash.
Favorite animals - I simply cannot choose just one... Right now, between home and school, I have a dog, cat, hamster, parakeet, and a cockateil! I also haven't done so yet, but would love to swim with dolphins, and see whales "in person".
Favorite things to do - Read and relax, spend time with my family; and redecorate rooms (as in anything on HGTV). I also like to take walks outside for exercise, and to admire the beautifully landscaped yards in my neighborhood, as well as to garden in my own yard.
Favorite number - 16 - because it's my birth date, my son's birth date, and I was "sweet sixteen" on the 16th!
Favorite places to visit - San Diego in California; and Lincoln Park in Rock Island. I also love visiting my son in Chicago. He lives right down the street from Wrigley Field, so is most certainly close to the action.
Favorite subjects to teach - Tough one! Guided reading with theme (trade) books; Art, and Science; but now I'm so enjoying teaching Writer's Workshop.
Personal information years in teaching - 29 years - 11 years in special education; and this is my 18th year in elementary education. (WOW! That means I've been teaching for almost 30 years!)
Birthday - December 16, 1957 (and proud of every year - even now that I'm actually 50...)
Family - Husband, Chris, a huge Rock Island High School Booster and sports fan; Son, Nick, 25 (in September), a 2006 college graduate from the University of Illinois, and working in Chicago; Daughter, Chelsea, 21 (in November!), a junior at the University of Illinois (and a huge extended family on both sides of the family!)
Family Pets - Rocky, a dachshund/beagle mix; Zoe, a Siamese mix; Classroom Pets - Tico, a cockatiel; Sweet Pea, a parakeet; Chewy, a hamster (Yes, I'm definitely an animal lover...)
