Where Learning is Fun!
Hi! My name is Mrs. Carmack. Welcome to Room #7 - a primary multiage classroom (grades 1 & 2).
First, a little about myself:
I am a life-long resident of Rock Island! In fact, I attended Longfellow Elementary School, Central Junior High School (which is now the Intermediate Academy), and Rock Island High School, graduating in 1975. I am proud to say that this is my 29th year teaching in the Rock Island / Milan School District! I taught 11 years in the SKIP program, a preschool program for students with special needs, and am currently in my eighteenth year at the elementary grade level.
Next, some information about my class:
I love teaching in a multi-age classroom! My students are six-, seven-, and eight-years old. They work cooperatively in teams, and are in flexible guided reading groups dependent on their needs and abilities. We enjoy many whole-class math activities together, and also have smaller math groups based on needs. We enjoy learning through themes. This year's themes are: First quarter- Getting
Acquainted; Earth Science & Dinosaurs; Second quarter- Elections, Oceans & Machines (including sub-topics on movement, matter and magnets); Third quarter - Animals, Communities & Friendship; Fourth quarter - Farms in Illinois, & Weather.
I especially enjoy watching the children help each other, or as they say, become "peer tutors". We use quality tools in the classroom and the Plan-Do-Study-Act process to insure continuous improvement in academic and behavioral areas. We are learning how to be respectful and responsible in all school settings. I'm also gradually introducing age-appropriate components of Conscious Discipline (which is used in the Head Start Preschool and Pre-kindergarten programs.) The children love what I've integrated so far, including School Family Jobs, Friends and Family Board, a "Safe Place"; the STAR technique (Stop, Take A deep breath, and Relax) and daily unifying activities that always include music.
I look forward to another great year and to helping "our" children grow and develop in a fun, engaging classroom.
